History

So far we've learned a few things about the house. William Greg came into the Horse Creek Valley area to start a cotton mill. He was the founder of the Graniteville Company, Mr. Greg was known as the father of Southern cotton manufacturing.

He built housing for his workers. Throughout Graniteville, Warrenville and Vaucluse you can see these homes still standing. Graniteville Company was the first and largest cotton mill in the southern region.

The house we purchased was owned by the Graniteville Company and was used as corporate housing for uppermanagement. "Presidents lived there" people have told us about this mansion of a house. Exciting I thought, I can't wait to hear more stories and get photos!

My imagination has taken me to a bygone era of ladies in corsets and bussels and men with large mustaches and sideburns in wool suits. When I walk up those 21 steps to get to the upper floor I wonder how many people walked up those very stairs. Did a governor or a senator visit one of those early presidents? With the double parlors, I'm sure there were many parties and social gatherings. Was the room heavy with cigar and pipe smoke as they sipped brandy or whisky talking about the politics of the day. Did the ladies share the latest embroidery techniques and talk about local events and where the best eggs could be purchased from the local farmer?
How I can't wait to find out more!
