Column Repair
A few days ago, after examining a column on the front porch, I discovered that these columns are hallow. This is why most of them have a bend to them in the middle from where the bottom panel meets the top flute. I'm not sure why they made them this way, but the design is a little flawed.
While working on the corner column, it basically fell apart. I discovered that this column had been basically not holding up the corner for some time. I thought they corner beam sagged a little. As a matter of fact, the rain gutter was keeping it help up in place. Needless to say, off to Lowe's I went!
I had to purchase a small bottle jack to jack up the corner. Once the temporary beam was in place, the corner lifted effortlessly. Tomorrow I place in the permanent beam, and wrap this sturdy beam with the panel and fluted sections previously left empty.
I will eventually reinforce each column with a hefty beam inside.
